Resin patios and paths in Middlesbrough

Resin-bound stone gives a smooth, seamless patio or path with no joints for weeds and a surface that lets rainwater drain straight through. It suits curved shapes and awkward spaces that would mean lots of slab cuts.

What resin-bound is

Resin-bound surfacing is natural aggregate (small stones) mixed with a clear resin and trowelled into a flat, even layer. Once cured, the stones are locked together with tiny gaps between them, so water soaks through rather than sitting on top.

Do not confuse it with resin-bonded, where stones are scattered onto a layer of resin. That gives a rougher, loose-topped finish and is not porous. For patios and garden paths, resin-bound is the one most people want.

Why choose resin for a patio or path

  • No joints. Nothing for weeds to root in and nothing to re-point.
  • Porous. Rain drains through, so fewer puddles, provided the base underneath is also free-draining or water has somewhere to go.
  • Any shape. Curves, circles and wavy edges cost no more effort than a straight line.
  • Lots of colours. Natural stone blends from silver and grey to gold and bronze.
  • Comfortable and even underfoot, which suits paths, older relatives and wheelchair users.

How it should be laid

Resin is only as good as what it sits on, and the mix has to be right on the day:

  1. A sound base. New resin usually goes over a purpose-laid porous base, or over existing concrete or tarmac if it is solid, level and free of cracks.
  2. Edging to hold the resin in and give a crisp line against lawn or borders.
  3. UV-stable resin. Ask for a UV-stable (aliphatic) resin, which resists the yellowing some cheaper resins show in sunlight.
  4. Correct depth and dry weather. The mix is trowelled to a consistent depth and needs dry conditions to cure, which affects when in the year it can be laid.

Where resin works best

Resin is great for garden paths, small courtyards, areas around trees and borders, and patios that need an unusual shape. If you want the look of individual slabs, choose porcelain or natural stone instead. Resin paths also pair well with steps in stone or porcelain.

Questions people ask

Can resin go over my old patio?

Sometimes. If the existing concrete or slabs are solid, level and not cracked or moving, resin can be laid over the top. Loose or sunken slabs need lifting first. We'll check at the site visit.

Does a resin patio go green?

Less than most surfaces, because there are no joints, but leaves and shade can still lead to some growth on top. A regular brush and an occasional wash keep it clean.

Is resin slippery?

A well-laid resin-bound surface has a slightly textured finish. Ask about anti-slip options if the area is shaded or sloping.

How much does a resin patio cost?

It depends on the area, the base needed and the stone blend. See what affects the price or ask for a free quote.
